The Second Law uses this merger of 3D and editing as a means of articulating the subject of Social Entropy, an idea borrowed from physics (the second law of thermodynamics) that asserts all forms of matter and energy will go from a process of order to chaos. As an ‘evolved’ species we have created mechanisms to control this decay, but should a perturbation occur within the system, for example a natural disaster or economic crisis, then a marked increase in social entropy results in the system becoming more disordered. The ultimate endpoint for the system would be a state of chaos. Tackling this subject follows along the same line of my previous work, broaching topics that transcend multiple subjects, cultures and time frames. In the case of entropy we could look at the decline of a government on a macro level or the demise of an individual on a micro level.
Fellow artists were placed in a hot room and told to continuously pace back and fourth. As such, their bodies went through a process of thermodynamic entropy over a short period of time. Each artist was filmed individually and then multiple layers of video were animated in 3D space to give the impression of a group dynamic undergoing Social Entropy.
